ABWA congratulates our past president, Taa Grays, Esq., on becoming the New York State Bar Association President-Elect!! 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾

Taa Grays has worked on behalf of the New York State Bar Association on issues from police reform to strategic planning and corporate governance throughout the past 20 years. Those leadership roles have given her a rich background of experience that she can draw upon in her president-elect role.

She co-chaired the association’s Strategic Planning Committee, the Task Force on Racism, Social Equity and the Law, and the Task Force on Racial Injustice and Police Reform. She is a member of the Business Law, Corporate Counsel and Women in Law sections, was the vice president of the First Judicial District on the Executive Committee and chaired the New York State Conference of Bar Leaders and the Committee on Women in the Law (now the Women in Law Section).

Grays previously served as vice president and associate general counsel of information governance at MetLife Legal Affairs. As the lead of information governance, Grays was responsible for the strategic management of MetLife’s global Information Governance Program. She led a seven-person team that developed, implemented and managed the information governance strategic plan.

She started with MetLife in 2003 in the litigation section and served as the chief of staff to the general counsel from 2010 to 2015. Prior to MetLife, Grays was an assistant district attorney with the Bronx District Attorney’s Office in its rackets bureau for five-and-a-half years.

Jessica Dufort is the first in her Haitian family to be born in the United States and attend law school. Jessica has an undergraduate degree and master’s degree from the Rutgers. She has over five years of public service under her belt having worked with US Senator Cory A. Booker, the National Black Child Development Institute, New Jersey Assemblywoman Verlina Reynolds-Jackson, and the New Jersey Legislative Black Caucus Foundation. During law school, she has served as the President of the Association of Black Law Students (ABLS). She is the Co-Editor in Chief of the Rutgers Races and the Law Review, she has also served as the Director of Alumni Relations for the Northeast Black Law Students Association (NEBLSA).

Imani St.Hilaire is a second-year J.D./MIA candidate at CUNY School of Law and City College of New York, committed to a career in international law and public service. Her hope is to focus in advocacy and international humanitarian affairs to use the law to advance justice and equity for underserved communities across the world particularly in the Caribbean-Latin American Region.

Assemblymember Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn represents the 42nd Assembly District in Brooklyn encompassing Ditmas Park, Flatbush, East Flatbush and Midwood. She is currently the New York State Assembly Majority Whip, Chair of the Subcommittee on Oversight of Minority and Women-Owned Business Enterprises (MWBEs) and serves on the following committees: Housing, Education, Governmental Operations, Health, Higher Education, and Ways & Means. She also sits on Governor Kathy Hochul’s Domestic Violence Advisory Council and New York City Mayor Eric Adams’ MWBE Task Force.
Born and raised in Flatbush, Brooklyn as the daughter of Haitian immigrants and heir to Haiti’s slave abolitionist Jean-Jacques Dessalines, Assemblymember Bichotte Hermelyn is the first Haitian American woman elected in New York City.
Since Assemblymember Bichotte Hermelyn became a legislator in 2015, she has introduced over 200 pieces of Legislation, 34 of which became law, and has co-sponsored over 250 others.

As an Assemblymember and District Leader, Assemblymember Bichotte Hermelyn has been an outspoken and ardent advocate on issues concerning her Assembly District and all New Yorkers, including (but not limited to) immigration, education, economic development, unemployment, education reform, healthcare access, senior citizen centers, affordable housing, school safety and women’s and LGBTQ rights, as well as other issues affecting the quality of life in the community.

Assemblymember Bichotte Hermelyn has also introduced vital legislation passed into law in areas including (but not limited to) housing, health, education, criminal justice, safety and voting rights.

Marie A. Richardson is the permanent Project Director of Bronx Legal Services, a program of Legal Services NYC that provides high-quality free civil legal services to thousands of low-income Bronx residents each year. Richardson has served as Acting Project Director of Bronx Legal Services since late 2019.

Prior to Bronx Legal Services, Marie worked for more than 25 years at The Legal Aid Society in a variety of managerial and supervisory roles, providing advice and counsel to attorneys in a number of areas including bankruptcy, employment, consumer affairs, immigration, family, housing, health and public benefits. She also previously worked at the New York City Human Resources Administration’s Adult Services Litigation Division where she counseled the agency on legal issues involving homeless individuals and families. Ms. Richardson is a proud graduate of Lehman College, CUNY and New York Law School.

Natalya G. Johnson, Esq. is a skilled corporate counsel with expertise in employment strategies, litigation, and impactful community leadership. Prior to joining Johnson & Johnson, she represented private and public sector clients in federal and state litigation and trial matters. Committed to pro bono service, Natalya started her legal career as an attorney fellow with Volunteer Lawyers for Justice. In 2024, she joined the Board of Trustees of Public Media NJ, the operator of NJ PBS.
